CREIGHTON'S DOUG MCDERMOTT RECEIVES MID-SEASON
HONORS
BOSTON (MA) -- After helping Creighton to a 10-1
start and a national ranking, Doug McDermott earns
the Lute Olson Award mid-season honors. He’s the
first player from a mid-major program to receive
this honor.
The 6-foot-7 sophomore leads the nation in scoring
(24.5) scoring 20 or more points in his last 10
games. McDermott had a career-high 35 points in a
road win at Tulsa. He followed that up with 27 in
win over Northwestern. He’s shooting 63% from the
field.
McDermott is also second in the Missouri Valley
Conference in rebounds (8.3) and has record four
double-doubles this season, including 25 points and
12 rebounds in a win over San Diego State and 24 and
12 in a victory over Nebraska.
His contributions have helped the Bluejays reach 10
wins before Christmas for just the third time in 94 seasons. It’s
also the first time in school history that the Jays
have been nationally ranked heading into their
Missouri Valley Conference opener.
The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the
nation’s top Division I player who has played at
least two seasons with his respective team. Freshmen
and first-year transfers can be named to the
All-America team, but are not eligible to receive
the Player of the Year honors.
The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute
Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which
were spent at the University of Arizona. During that
stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference
titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final
Four appearances and a National Championship in
1997.
The winner of the 2012 Lute Olson Award will be
announced on March 30 in New Orleans, site of the
NCAA men’s basketball championship. Connecticut’s
Kemba Walker was the recipient of the 2011 award. |
