RICE’S MICHAEL HARRIS NAMED COLLEGEINSIDER.COM NATIONAL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

Most people didn’t notice, but Rice senior forward Michael Harris had a monster season. His monster season earned him CollegeInsider.com’s National Most Valuable Player award.

The 6-foot-6 Harris averaged 20. 6 points and 11.7 rebounds a game. He was the game-high scorer on 24 occasions and posted a game-high in rebounds 29 times this season. Nearly one-third of his 363 rebounds came on the offensive glass (112).

Harris connected on 61% of his shots from the field, which is even more impressive when you factor in that he was 7-for-29 from 3-point range.

“He should have made everybody’s All-America team,” says CollegeInsider.com’s Matt Drake. “He faced double and triple teams every night and still put up huge numbers. He’s a warrior.”

In a season dotted with impressive performances, Harris had his best game on Feb. 27 when he matched his career-high with 30 points and grabbed a career-best 24 rebounds, in a win over Hawaii.

That stat line made Harris the school’s all-time leader in both points and rebounds.

The preseason WAC Player of the Year, Harris was named to CollegeInsider.com All-America team on March 8, but surprisingly that was his only national honor.

“To put it in simple terms, it’s a joke that he did not receive more recognition,” says Drake. “If he played in the Big 12 everyone would be singing his praises. It’s a shame that most people didn’t take notice of his four seasons at Rice.”

Harris had 22 double-doubles, which is a school record for one season.
