National Honors
PLAYER
OF THE WEEK: Two steals, nine straight points,
and one Colonial League title victory made for the
best 2 minutes in the young career of VCA point
guard Eric Maynor. The sophomore sensation
bounced back from 2 subpar games against Drexel and
Georgia State by willing the Rams to victory,
seemingly on his own. Maynor’s three game totals in
the Colonial League tournament were a respectable 35
points, 14 rebounds, 16 assists, and 7 steals, but
his clutch play in the championship was the biggest
reason the Rams locked up an automatic bid, the
school’s first since 2004.
TEAM
OF THE WEEK: With an unlikely road win, the
Albany Great Danes captured their second
straight America East tournament title, this time
doing so on the hostile court of chief rival
Vermont. The thrilling 60-59 win capped off a
stretch of 13 wins in 15 games, with the two losses
coming by 4 and 1. This team is on fire coming into
the NCAA tournament, and was rewarded with a 13
seed, much better than the 16 seed obtained last
season.
COACH
OF THE WEEK: By ending Bucknell’s reign of
terror on the Patriot League, Ralph Willard
and his Holy Cross Crusaders won their first Patriot
League tournament since 2003, and the automatic Big
Dance ticket that comes along with it. Coach Willard
has clearly found a home in Worcester, Mass., and is
now responsible for four of the five conference
championships in Holy Cross history. The 25-8
Crusaders had to survive a 55-53 thriller against
American in the semifinals before upending the Bison
74-66 in the title game. |
