PLAYER OF
THE WEEK:
It may have
taken a few months, but Ohio State fans can finally
see the dominance of star recruit Greg Oden as
the team heads into the Big Dance. Oden was simply too
good for the Big 10, as Ohio State dominated the
conference tournament in Chicago. A relatively quiet
championship game blowout of Wisconsin followed two
scintillating performances in closer wins over
Michigan and Purdue in the first two rounds. Over the
three games, Oden scored 51 points, grabbed 37 boards,
and blocked 12 shots, while being named VMP of the
tournament.
TEAM
OF THE WEEK: From tip off against Oklahoma to the
final game of championship week, the Kansas
Jayhawks proved they were as good as any team in
the country. The Jayhawks used stifling defense,
balanced scoring, and some late game heroics to win
their second straight Big 12 Championship and capture
a #1 seed. Overcoming a 22-point deficit, Kansas beat
Texas 88-84 in overtime, using big games from Brandon
Rush, Julian Wright, Sherron Collins, and Mario
Chalmers. Bill Self has his squad playing outstanding
basketball, and the team served notice they will be a
major factor in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
COACH
OF THE WEEK: It may have gone unnoticed amidst the
other conference championships, but Ernie Kent
and his Oregon Ducks were arguably the most impressive
conference tournament champions of the week. The Ducks
won their first PAC10 tournament title since 2003 by
absolutely steamrolling through the conference. First,
the Ducks beat Arizona by 19, then upstart al by 18,
and finally Southern Cal by 24 in the finals. Kent has
the Ducks playing outstanding basketball to close out
the regular season and no one will want to play this
team in the tournament.
