A
talented and proven recruiter, Ramon
Williams is in his second season at DePaul
and his fifth as a member of Jerry
Wainwright's coaching staff. Williams'
initial season with the Blue Demons, he
helped mentor a young squad (the youngest
DePaul team in seven years) through the
rugged BIG EAST Conference and the
eighth-toughest schedule in the nation.
Williams' rookie campaign in Lincoln Park
was highlighted by wins over NCAA
Tournament teams California, UAB, Seton
Hall and BIG EAST Tournament champion
Syracuse.
Williams comes to Lincoln Park in 2005
after spending the three previous seasons
at Richmond as a member of Wainwright's
staff. Williams helped the Spiders to 50
wins and berths in the 2003 NIT and 2004
NCAA Tournament. A native of Roanoke, Va.,
Williams served as an assistant coach at
his alma mater, VMI, for nine seasons
before coming to Richmond in 2002.
Promoted to associate head coach in 1999,
Williams oversaw the Keydets' basketball
operations that included facilities,
scouting and recruiting. Prior to VMI,
Williams spent one season as an assistant
coach in the high school ranks.
Williams, a 1990 VMI graduate, enjoyed a
sensational collegiate playing career. He
earned All-Southern Conference honors in
1989 and was selected to the league's
second team in 1990. He was also tabbed to
the All-Tournament team in 1988 (first
team) and 1990 (second team). Williams
finished his stellar career as the Keydets
third all-time leading scorer with 1,630
points. He holds the program mark for
three-pointers in a game (seven) and for
three-point field goal percentage in a
season.
His records for three-pointers in a season
(both made and attempted) stood until
2001-02 when Jason Conley, the nation's
leading scorer, broke those marks. Ramon,
along with his twin brother Damon, were
one of the most prolific scoring duos in
NCAA history. The brothers were inducted
into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in
September 2001.
Williams and his wife, Donnie, are the
proud parents of sons Jackie and Jarhon.
