Michael
Hunt enters his third season as a member
of the University of Miami coaching staff.
Over the last two seasons Hunt has helped
lead Miami to a 34-29 record, including 14
ACC wins, five wins over ranked opponents,
two straight post season appearances, the
school's first ACC tournament win, the
school's first National Invitation
Tournament win since 1963, and the first
NIT road win in school-history.
Last season Hunt helped guide UM to an
18-16 record which included wins over two
ranked teams, the Hurricanes first win
over North Carolina in Chapel Hill, the
school's first ACC Tournament win, and a
second consecutive post season appearance.
Miami won two games in the 2006 NIT
defeating Oklahoma State at the BankUnited
Center, the first NIT game hosted by the
University of Miami, and a road win
against Creighton marking the Hurricanes
first NIT road win.
In his first season Hunt helped the
Hurricanes record one of the nation's most
surprising turnarounds. Miami, which was
picked to finish last in the ACC, posted a
16-13 overall record including seven
league wins, three wins over ranked
opponents and a berth in the National
Invitation Tournament.
Prior to joining the UM coaching staff,
Hunt spent three seasons as the head coach
at Towson University. During his tenure he
guided the Tigers to a 23-63 record. His
11-18 record during his inaugural season
marked the best record by a Towson coach
in his first season.
That season the Tigers finished in a tie
for sixth in the Colonial Athletic
Conference despite being picked to finish
last in the preseason poll, and ended long
losing streaks Drexel (15 games), Delaware
(12 games) and Hofstra (11 games). In
2002-03 Hunt led Towson to its first CAA
conference tournament victory with a 70-65
win over William and Mary.
Prior to taking over at Towson, Hunt
served four seasons as an assistant coach
at the University of Georgia where he
helped put together a top-five recruiting
class in 1998. During his tenure at
Georgia he help guide the Bulldogs to a
National Invitational Tournament
appearance in 1998 and an NCAA Tournament
berth in 2001.
Hunt was an assistant at the University of
Tennessee from 1994-97. In his three
seasons in Knoxville Hunt was instrumental
in rebuilding the Volunteer program
assisting in the recruiting of three
straight top-20 recruiting classes. Two of
those classes were ranked among the top-10
nationally while one class was ranked
among the top-five in the nation.
Hunt also served on the coaching staffs at
Fordham University (1992-94) and Towson
State University (1988-92). While an
assistant at Towson, Hunt helped guide the
Tigers to a 73-47 record, three
consecutive East Coast Conference
Championships and NCAA Tournament
appearances in 1990 and 1991.
Hunt began his coaching career as a
graduate assistant coach at Florida State
University from 1986-88. During his two
seasons in Tallahassee the Seminoles
registered a 38-22 record including an NIT
and NCAA Tournament appearance.
Hunt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Political Science from Furman University
in 1985. He received a Master of Science
in Athletic Administration from Florida
State University in 1988.
Hunt and his wife Sonja have two children:
