Kevin
Bromley enters his sixth full season as
head coach of the Mustangs after posting a
7-7 conference record last year and led
the team to the Big West Conference
Tournament semifinal game.
Four of Bromley's players earned
all-conference accolades led by junior
Derek Stockalper's first team selection.
Sophomore Dawin Whiten earned second-team
honors while Trae Clark and Chaz Thomas
earned all-freshman honors.
Clark was eventually named the Big West
Conference Freshman of the Year.
Had it not been for injuries to Coby
Leavitt and Titus Shelton the Mustangs
could have placed four players on the
all-freshmen team.
Leavitt was limited to just seven games to
start the season posting solid numbers
against teams like Stanford and Colorado.
Shelton returned to the team late in the
season and averaged 17.7 points and 7.5
rebounds in the conference tournament.
Bromley led the school to its first
back-to-back winning seasons at the
Division I level during the 2001-02 and
2002-03 seasons.
He guided Cal Poly to a 16-14 mark and a
fourth-place finish (10-8) in the Big West
in his second full season as head coach,
leading the team to a Big West Conference
Tournament Championship game appearance in
the school's seventh year in the
conference, falling short by three points
of a NCAA Tournament appearance.
Bromley served six years as the Associate
Head Coach and half of the 2000-01 season
as the interim head coach before taking
over the position as the head coach of the
Mustangs on a full-time basis for the
2001-02 season. A familiar face on campus
and in the community, Bromley has led the
Mustangs to five Big West Conference
Tournament appearances. As he starts his
sixth full year of coaching the team,
Bromley and his staff have the hopes of
taking it beyond the first round in the
years to come.
A tireless worker both during the season
and in the off-season, Bromley will try to
blend the 11 returnees with three
newcomers, several of whom will impact the
team right away. With all the experience
returning, plus two Division I transfers,
the Mustangs, under Bromley's leadership,
should be competitive.
Arriving at Cal Poly in 1995 as the top
assistant for coach Jeff Schneider,
Bromley was quickly promoted to Associate
Head Coach the following year.
Since his arrival from Southern Utah
University where he was an assistant on
Bill Evans' staff, Bromley has been a key
figure in turning the program into one of
the most dangerous offensive scoring teams
in the conference and on the West Coast.
Spending time with the play of the
Mustangs' backcourt, Cal Poly has been one
of the top scoring teams in the Big West
Conference for the past six seasons and is
consistently ranked among the nation's
best for offensive scoring per game.
Prior to arriving at Southern Utah,
Bromley began his coaching career at
Colorado State University from 1984-87
before moving to Chemeketa Community
College in Oregon where he helped guide
the team to a 56-7 record in two seasons,
including a 33-0 mark in 1989 to capture
the Northwest Community College
Association title.
A 1983 graduate of Colorado State
University with a degree in Physical
Education, Bromley also earned his
master's degree in Education
Administration at CSU in 1984.
As a player, the Denver, Colo. native was
a standout guard at Mid Plains Community
College in Nebraska before taking his
talents to Colorado State, where he
continued to excel on the court, posting
the fourth-best single season assist total
ever while serving as a captain in
1982-83.
Bromley and his wife Stacey live in Arroyo
Grande, along with his stepsons Chad and
Cody.
