Bart
Lundy is in his fourth season at the helm
of the High Point men's basketball
program. He is considered one of of the
top young coaches in the profession,
averaging over 20 wins a year during his
eight-year career. Last season, Lundy
became one of the youngest coaches to
record his 150th career win as High Point
topped Western Carolina (11/23/05).
Lundy, who became HPU's 10th head men's
basketball coach on April 22, 2003, wasted
little time in returning the Panthers to
prominence. He engineered one of the
nation's best turnarounds in 2003-04 while
leading HPU to a 19-11 mark and a spot in
the Big South title game. For his efforts,
Lundy was named the 2004 National Rookie
Coach of the Year by collegeinsider.com.
Additionally, under Lundy's guidance
forward Danny Gathings became the first
student-athlete in High Point history to
be named an NCAA Division I All-American
when he earned honorable-mention
All-America honors in 2004.
During his tenure at HPU, Lundy has led
the Panthers to appearances in the Big
South Tournament semifinals in each of his
three seasons. Under his guidance, High
Point has established program records for
most Division I wins in a season, most
conference victories, most road wins,
highest RPI ranking and highest preseason
ranking. In 2005-06, Lundy guided the
Panthers to 16 wins with the nation's
second youngest squad. Lundy's uptempo
style of play has allowed High Point to
lead the Big South Conference in scoring
in each of the past three seasons.
Lundy came to High Point after five
highly-successful seasons as the head
coach at Queens University of Charlotte,
where he led the Royals to a 115-41 record
and a pair of NCAA Division II Elite Eight
appearances, including a trip to the Final
Four in 2003.
Queens won the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic
Conference (CVAC) in four of Lundy's five
seasons on the bench, and finished the
season ranked in the Top Five in three of
Lundy's five years there (including a No.
3 ranking in 2003).
Under Lundy, the Royals shattered the
school record for victories three times
(including a 29-4 mark in 2002-03), set
the CVAC record for conference wins in a
season with a 19-3 finish in 2001, and
have broken the school record for points
scored in a game (126) five times since
the 2000 season.
In 2002-03, Queens was ranked in the Top
10 nationally in scoring offense, scoring
margin, field-goal percentage defense, and
free-throw shooting.
A 1994 graduate of Winthrop, Lundy was a
player at UNC Pembroke and Lenoir-Rhyne
before transferring to the Rock Hill,
S.C., school. Following graduation, he
broke into coaching as an assistant for
two seasons at Winthrop before leaving to
become an assistant at Queens for three
seasons under Dale Layer (who is now the
head coach at Colorado State, and led the
Rams to the Mountain West Conference title
and an NCAA berth in 2003). He earned his
masters degree from Winthrop in 1998.
While Lundy was an assistant and head
coach at Queens from 1995-2003, he
recruited and coached five Division II
All-Americans. More importantly, during
the same span, the school graduated 90
percent of its men's basketball players.
Lundy is well-connected and
nationally-known in the college basketball
community. He has served on the National
Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)
Assistant Coaches Board of Directors. He
also worked as director of the Dave
Cowens/Charlotte Hornets College Coaches
Clinic and has worked in coaching clinics
throughout the world.
A native of Galax, Va., Lundy attended
five different high schools in North
Carolina thanks to his father's employment
with Kroger, including Southwest Guilford
High School in High Point. He graduated
from Hickory High School.
Lundy and his wife, Lori, have three sons:
Ian, Kellen and Alec.
