Like a lot of coaches and players around the country, we are very anxious to get our season underway. Because of our trip to the Dominican Republic, we have had the opportunity to practice as a team since October 1. Getting an early start has been a tremendous boost to our effort to get this team ready for the season. This season we will be young. There are no seniors on the roster so it is a major plus to be able to start a couple of weeks before a lot of other programs had their first practice. We are coming off an exhibition season that saw an offensive explosion of sorts. We average over 110 points per game. We cannot expect for that to continue so we will need to improve our halfcourt offense.

Tennessee's Buzz Peterson named "Friday the 13th" as his favorite horror flick. This film has become pop culture. Most with a pulse are familiar with Jason and his 1970's goalie mask. The role of Alice, played by Adrienne King, was originally slated for Sally Field, but she declined. But one excellent actor did show up in the film. You may recognize a very young Kevin Bacon. What "Psycho" was to my generation, "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween" are to the thirty-something crowd. Good stuff! >>> BUY IT

Every coach is passionate about their chosen profession, but every coach also has a passion outside the confines of a basketball court. For Marist coach Dave Magarity it's movies. For Southwest Missouri State's Barry Hinson it's barbequing. One of my passions is America's Pastime and CollegeInsider.com has given me an opportunity to step outside the box and write about baseball. I am by no means an expert, but I follow the game very closely and look forward to offering my thoughts on teams within each region.

   MARCH TO MADNESS 2003-04
Murry Bartow has a lot of offenvie weapons at East Tennessee State, but it's the Bucs defense that has been so impressive. In their win over UNC-Wilmington, ETSU's full court press created 26 turnovers. Senior Zakee Wadood (left), a double-double machine, is a monster on the interior and guard Timmy Smith is one of the nation's most exciting sophomores. This team should be Top 5 all season in the CI Mid-Major Top 25... Murray State is now 4-0, after hammering Southern Miss, 94-54. It's just the fifth time the Racers have started 4-0 in 30 seasons

   PLAYER PROFILE
Austin Peay's Adrian Henning was a first team All OVC selection last season and has steadily improved throughout his career. The 6-foot-7 Henning is now set for a stellar senior season. Henning averred 15.5ppg and 7.1rpg last year. He shot 40% from three point range and was ninth in the OVC in field goal percentage(56.1).

RANTS AND RAVES

    with Kyle Macy, Morehead St.

Whatever happened to midnight madness? Countless teams still kick off the season with such festivities, but it seems to have lost much of its' luster. Perhaps it's because that the schedule has been changed. No longer is it October 15. Now it's closest Saturday to the 15th. Last year it was the 12th. This year it's the 18th. That cost us six practice days. Bad change.

Some coaches may like the reduced practice time, but not this coach. Another thing that I find troubling is the discussion within our conference that we will go to a 20-game schedule, starting next season. This would be another bad change. Better put, it would be stupid! This season Jacksonville State and Samford have joined the league, which now gives the Ohio Valley Conference eleven teams. Now it would only seem logical to me to add a twelfth team and split the conference into two divisions. But maybe that would make too much sense. A 20-game league schedule in the OVC is just a bad idea. No, it's stupid.

A HUNGRY TEAM

We have been working in preparation for the start of the season. We are going to begin the 2003-04 campaign against a very good Winthrop team. Gregg Marshall has done an excellent job in taking his team to four of the last five NCAA tournaments. It will be a good test to start the season. We have a very hungry group. All of the returning players really appreciated our success and our accomplishments from the 2002-03 season, but they were all very disappointed with the way in which are season came to an end. They are determined to work hard and become an even better team this year. We also welcome some new faces who were obviously not a part of our 32-win campaign. Overall I have been very pleased with their development, thus far.

MAGARITY: When you played in the NBA, who talked the most trash?

MACY:
Larry Bird, but when you back it up is it considered trash?

MAGARITY: Time for an IQ question. Who is more intelligent, Joe Millionaire or Joey Butafuco?

MACY: I believe the women of Joe Millionaire are the real intelligent ones. I know none are in it for the money. That is why they are all just 'plain Jane's' in appearance. They realize it is the inner beauty that is the most important issue. Proving their intelligence once again, they are not tricked by the $ signs, they realize one million dollars would not last very long in today's economy. Besides, if they were in it just for the money, they would just go find a pro athlete to date? Hey, that might be the next series.

MAGARITY: Which is more credible, the RPI or the FPI?

MACY: FBI, I know they received criticism and were under some scrutiny with J Edgar Hoover's files etc..., but I believe they have made a nice comeback! Oh, you said RPI or F "P" I.

  ANSWER MY QUESTIONS

       with DAVE MAGARITY

DAVE MAGARITY:  Let's begin with something simple. How does Morehead State stack up this season in the Ohio Valley Conference?

KYLE MACY (MOREHEAD STATE): We should be picked as one of the top 3 teams to start the year, but you know as a coach your more interested in where you finish at the end. We lost two starters from last years regular season OVC Champs squad, but do have the 2003 OVC player of the year returning in Ricky Minard.

MAGARITY: Where does your 1978 Kentucky team rank among the all-time great teams?

MACY: I am a little bias, but (outside of Kentucky), I believe the 78 team doesn't get the credit it deserves. It would match up just as well as any of the other teams considered all-time greats! The reason I believe the 78 team is overlooked is because the media explosion in coverage didn't start until the following year, 79, with Magic and Bird. The 78 squad had no weaknesses, was versatile and didn't let pressure bother their performance

31-year old Tony Barbee has studied both coaching and style under the watchful eye of John Calipari. Enough said. Now in his third season at Memphis, Barbee helped to secure one of the nation's top recruiting classes in 2001. This stylish assistant rounds out a staff, which includes Milt Wagner, Derek Kellogg Ed Schilling who is a former best-dressed head coach in the Horizon Conference. Louisville coach Rick Pitino has enjoyed a lot of success outside of basketball. The former Boston Celtics head man authored the book, "Success iss A Choice," which was a national best seller. He has also produced "Born to Coach: A Season with the New York Knicks," "Full Court Pressure," and "Lead to Succeed." But Pitino's success is not limited to just publishing. Since 1988 Pitino has

dabbled as a horse owner, with results that would be envious to most in the business. Pitino has been a joint owner on three horses (Halory Hunter, The Groom is Red and AP Valentine), which have each won Grade I races. To put that success in perspective, just 0.6 percent of North American thoroughbreds ever win a stakes race. Pitino and his current stable, "Ol Memorial Stable," named after a golf club in Tampa, currently own several horses... It's not L.A. Showtime, but Belmont games bring out the best of Nashville, including Vince Gill who has been friends with Belmont head coach Rick Byrd for 17 years. Others in attendance at Bruins games include Garth Brooks, Amy Grant, Faith Hill, George Jones, Barbara Mandrell, Reba McEntire, Larry Stewart and Trisha Yearwood to name a few.  MORE LIFE & STYLES
