Our recent loss to Pittsburgh was a result of a total
breakdown, both offensively and defensively. The way in which
we played was very much out of character for us, but much of
that credit goes to the Panthers, who played very well.
Overall, I am very proud of this group. They have shown a lot
of grit and determination, thus far. We had hoped to use the
nice win over Cleveland State as a spring board, but we didn't
play well against the Panthers. It's a learning process and
with time we will respond better. This group is very
inexperienced, but with each game they make improvements as
individuals and as a team. It is a long season, which has
barely just begun. We have some very talented players and I
believe we will fair well.

I asked Bruiser Flint (Drexel) and Karl Hobbs (George
Washington) to name their favorite western. Both responded with
"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." I won't tab either as "the ugly"
here, besides Eli Wallach was sensational in the role (Tuco). A
little known fact; Charles Bronson was originally offered the
part of Tuco. Lee Van Cleef plays "the bad" and Clint
Eastwood was "the good." The film is long, but engaging. It's full
of tremendous one-liners, with almost everything Wallach says being
humorous. >>> BUY IT
The Philadelphia Phillies have gone from one of the
most undependable bullpens to one of the best. Getting Billy Wagner
give Philadelphia one of the premier closers, but the recent signing
of Tim Worrell now gives the Phills a great set-up man. The
Bullpen was the reason the Marlins and not the Phillies were in
postseason. If PatBurrell can get back on track, the
city of brotherly love 'may have' the best team in the National
League... Look for Oriole pitcher Kurt Ainsworth to
emerge as a solid starter.

MARCH TO MADNESS
2003-04
Jameer
Nelson isn't the only reason that St. Joseph's is off to a
6-0 start. Fellow backcourt mate Delonte West (left) has been
sensational. West had 27 points and 9 boards in the win over Boston
College. The Hawks have one of the best backcourts in America...
How about the job Jim Baron is doing at Rhode Island.
The Rams are 5-2 and are coming off a win over Providence, the
second in as many years.
PLAYER PROFILE
Julius
Page 6'3 guard Pittsburgh (Avg. 12.2ppg). This lefty can score in
bunches. Page is a very good athlete who loves the transition game. At
his shooting guard position, Page is capable of taking over games with
his offense and defense. He has some serious ups.
RANTS AND RAVES
with Phil Martelli, St. Joseph's
75%
of the starters are back. 78% of the scoring returns. And four of the
top teams boast four returning starters. Yes, I am talking about the
Atlantic 10 Conference. It's common to say that your particular
league is as good as ever, but the preceding numbers are evidence that
it's actually true in the A-10. And there is less separation between
the top and the bottom this season.
On October 15th the coaching fraternity took a positive first step, in
an effort to correct some of the problems of the recent past. The
earth did not shake and there was no planet realignment, but step one
was positive. Make no mistake about it, to a man all coaches want to
make a good game great. We recognize the problems. Now we have to
pledge to ourselves and our fellow coaches that we will fix it. And I
believe we will. In all honesty, it was one of the most uplifting
meetings in recent NABC history. It would be great to see such
a meeting every year. It's never a bad thing to have a refresher
course.
CONFIDENCE
I believe that Penn State can be as good as every other
team in the Big Ten. We have a lot of talented young
players who are very enthusiastic about the upcoming
campaign and, as a team, I do not believe that we are
lacking anything. Overall this is a young squad, with just
one senior on the roster so while I think we will be very
good this season our youth bodes well for our future
success. We do have a lot of players that really have not
been exposed to winning on a regular basis. There in lies
the challenge for my coaching staff and I. A point of
emphasis has been on instilling confidence and a positive
attitude each and every day. Both the present and future
is bright.

WRIGHT:
It's a very tense competition that both Bruiser and I take
great pride in. If he wasn't such a good guy, I'd hate him
for the clothes he wears.
MAGARITY:
Which is more annoying, Aflac commercials or J-Low and Ben
Affleck?
WRIGHT:
(laughing) Nothing about J-Lo is annoying.
Throughout the season I will be going five-on-five with
coaches all across the country. Five questions, ranging
from team insight, the state of the game, the state of
coaching to some off the wall questions.
DAVE MAGARITY:Entering your third season, are you on schedule or ahead of
schedule?
JAY WRIGHT (VILLANOVA):
I'd say we're on
schedule. The current freshmen group is only our second recruiting
class. I like the kind of people we have brought in and I like the
kind of kids we are able to be involved with.
MAGARITY:
How often do you talk to Rollie Massimino?
WRIGHT:
It's usually a couple
of times a week. Coach sometimes stops by practice or I see him at a
function.
MAGARITY: Who
would get more done in the Middle East, Dick Cheney or John Chaney?
WRIGHT:
John Chaney. He definitely has a better heart.
MAGARITY: Is it
true that Bruiser Flint is more stylish than you?
Now
in his ninth season at UMBC,
Randy Monroe
has established himself as one of the better young
coaches in America. Last year Monroe was one of 27
Division I coaches nationally to receive AFLAC
National Assistant Coach of the Year honors. And in
addition to being a stellar coach, Magnificent
Monroe is quickly emerging as one to be reckoned
with on the catwalk. He brings a sophisticated and
upscale style to the sidelines. MORE

Drexel
head coach Bruiser Flint (pictured) is well-known in the city
of brotherly love, but he is not the most well-known individual on the
Drexel campus. That distinction goes to team manager Calvin Hicks
who is an inspiration to everyone associated with Drexel athletics.
The 42-year old Hicks, who has been part of the basketball program for
well over a decade now, is mentally
handicapped, but that has not stopped him from doing what he loves
and enjoying life. "He's a great person to be around," says Flint.
"The first day I took the job he walked into my office and asked me
if he was traveling with the team. I had no idea who he was, but I
quickly learned how much he means to this program." Hicks, like the
Cuba Gooding, Jr.' character in the new movie "Radio" has
become a true inspiration to everyone at Drexel. "He has such a big
heart and he is always so happy. So many people don't appreciate
what they have, but that's not Calvin. He does just about everything
for our team and everybody loves the guy." In case you missed it,
D.J. Strawberry, the son of Darryl Strawberry is a
freshman this season at the University of Maryland. He isn't an
offensive threat like his dad, but he can defend. MORE LIFE & STYLES
