This is the youngest team that I have every been associated with, in all my years of coaching. Anytime you depend on a lot of young players to produce immediately, you can expect it will take time to find a comfort level. Our lack of experience will result in mistakes, during the early part of the season. But as this season progresses, I expect our young guys to make great strides. As a coaching staff, we expect them to work that much harder to improve as a team and by seasons end I fully expect that this will be a much better team. The mistakes will diminish and we will simply be better.

Stetson's Derek Waugh named the "Predator" as his all-time favorite monster. Believe it or not, this film began shooting with Jean-Claude Van Damme as the predator, but an uncooperative Van Damme was fired and the alien was remade to look more horrific. 7-foot-2 Kevin Peter Hall took over as Arnold Schwarzenegger's adversary. It's not often that a film offers up two Governors. The former Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura also stars, with his great line, "I don't have time to bleed." >>> BUY IT

Every coach is passionate about their chosen profession, but every coach also has a passion outside the confines of a basketball court. For Marist coach Dave Magarity it's movies. For Southwest Missouri State's Barry Hinson it's barbequing. One of my passions is America's Pastime and CollegeInsider.com has given me an opportunity to step outside the box and write about baseball. I am by no means an expert, but I follow the game very closely and look forward to offering my thoughts on teams within each region.

Coming in December 2003

   MARCH TO MADNESS 2003-04
Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes (left) is a little concerned that his inside players have not developed as quickly as he had hoped. The Rebels will have to rely heavily on Justin Reed... Florida International's Taurance Johnson and Carlos Morban will miss the first two games of the season. Their absence was mandated by the NCAA.

   PLAYER PROFILE
Timmy Bowers 6-2 guard Mississippi State (Avg 14.7ppg 3.1apg). Bowers, can handle the ball, is a good defender and can knock down the open three. Last season he connected on 41% of his attempts. Look for him to become the number one option for the Bulldogs this season.

RANTS AND RAVES

  with Jessie Evans, UL-Lafayette

It has gotten to the point where I could step on the court and consistently hit 3-point shots. That should be a clear indication that the line needed to be moved back. Moving the arc back to the International mark would be good for college basketball. Anytime you can spread things out, it makes for a better game. I will be curious to see how the experiment goes.

Like a lot of coaches, and I mean A LOT, I will also be interested to see how the Runway to the Fashionable Four unfolds this season. If you thought Angela Lento's style stuff was silly you had better think again. First of all, we are all so competitive so we all want to out-style the next guy. Secondly, it's a fun spin on a serious topic. If you don't take yourself seriously nobody else will and that should begin with your attire. If you look good you coach good. And if you coach well then your team will play well. Everyone wants to make a good impression and that begins with your threads so start styling.

TEAM CONCEPT

Now in my fourth season at Tulane I really believe that the foundation for success has been laid. When I took over this program we only had seven players on scholarship. Since that first season we have continued to work hard both on and off the court. Last season we had our best recruiting class and this season we should see the most significant impact from freshmen players since I have been here. I fully expect to three freshmen to step right in and make major contributions and I expect all five of them to contribute this season. This season I believe we have the right blend of talent and personality, which is necessary to be a 'team.' Since day one our emphasis has been on the team concept and expect to see our best 'team,' in four years, take the floor.

ELLIS: Rhythm and Blues from the 50's, 60's and 70's and Modern Jazz. My own CD is somewhere there because somebody always is wanting to listen to it. I like Al Green, Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, etc.

MAGARITY:
Which former player has made the biggest impact on you?.

ELLIS: I've never put one player I've coached ahead of another player. They have all made an impact in a different way

Throughout the season I will be going five-on-five with coaches all across the country. Five questions, ranging from team insight, the state of the game, the state of coaching to some off the wall questions.

  ANSWER MY QUESTIONS

       with DAVE MAGARITY

DAVE MAGARITY: What are your thoughts on the expanded 3-point line?

CLIFF ELLIS (AUBURN): To be honest Dave, I always thought that's the distance is should be. The college one is too short and the NBA line is too long.

MAGARITY: Would you have preferred to see the lane widened, as was discussed?

ELLIS: No. I like the game where it is. The lane was changed to give the Europeans a chance in the Olympics. This is the game we play in America, and we need to stick with it. You need to get in the paint and play. The game doesn't need to be changed.

MAGARITY: If you could have a cup of coffee with any historical figure, who would it be?

ELLIS: Jesus Christ.

MAGARITY: What would I find in the Cliff Ellis CD collection?

Stetson assistant coach Jon Coffman is just now starting to get a lot attention from the fashion eye, but he has already put together a pretty impressive coaching resume. The 1996 graduate of Washington & Lee is now in his third season at Stetson and his list of duties everything from scouting to fund raising. Coffman might be a relative unknown in coaching, but he is quickly racking up style points.  MORE FASHION

Florida A&M figures to be a factor in the MEAC this season, but getting the Rattlers back to the NCAA tournament, for just the second time in school history, isn't the only thing on the mind of head coach Mike Gillespie (pictured) these days. Perhaps most pressing is the health of Victor Monaros. "It's a sad story," says

Gillespie, "but Victor is doing well and hopefully everything will work out for the best." The 20-year old Monaros has cirrhosis of the liver and is in desperate need of a liver transplant. According to Gillespie, Monaros is in good spirits as he awaits a donor, which could take up to six months. Currently on the waiting list at Shands Hospital in Florida, Monaros is obviously in no condition to play college basketball this season. If all goes according to plan, Monaros could be back with the team next season [more on Monaros in the December issue of Basketball Times]... COMING SOON: Everyone knows how good of a basketball coach Florida's Billy Donovan is, but few know of his fascination for sharks.  MORE LIFE & STYLES
