Charlotte 49ers head men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz hired Bobby Kummer as Assistant Basketball Coach, June 21, 2005. Kummer, who served as the program's Director of Basketball Operations during the 2004-05 season, filled the hole vacated by Rob Moxley, who took a similar position at Maryland earlier this summer.

Kummer served as an assistant coach for the 49ers alongside Lutz for two seasons (1996-98), under then-head coach Melvin Watkins. Kummer moved with Watkins when Watkins took over as head coach at Texas A&M and spent six years (1998-2004) as an assistant, there. He returned to Charlotte, last season.

"We are fortunate to have Bobby join our staff after serving us so well as the Director of Basketball Operations," Lutz said. "He has developed into an excellent assistant coach with a wide-range of recruiting contacts. Bobby is also a former player and he brings the same passion to his job as he did to the court in his playing days. He will be involved in all aspects of our program and will be especially involved with development of our post players, scouting opponents and defensive instruction. I am extremely pleased, both personally and professionally, to announce his hiring at Charlotte."

"I'm very excited to be able to return to Charlotte and represent the 49ers as an assistant basketball coach," Kummer said. "It's a great honor to be able to come back and coach for the school you played at and be able to work with such a class guy as coach Lutz and to be a part of a program with such history and tradition. I would like to thank coach Lutz, Miss (Judy) Rose, the current staff and the university community for this great opportunity for both myself and my wife."

Kummer, the 49ers team captain in 1995 and 1996 played in 114 games during his four-year 49ers career. A two-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic all-Region honoree who graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in history in 1996, Kummer was named the Metro Conference Male Academic Student-Athlete of the Year in 1995. He won the 49ers' coveted Grubstake Award in 1993 and 1996 and helped the 49ers to the 1995 Metro Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament and the 1994 NIT.

Known as a hard-nosed player, Kummer might best be remembered for losing two teeth in a collision during a Jan. 19, 1995 game vs. Louisville, spitting them out and returning to action during that 86-82 victory.

With the hiring of Kummer, Lutz, a 1980 graduate of the university, now boasts a staff made up entirely of 49ers. Assistants Benny Moss (1992), Dalonte Hill (2001) and Kummer (1996) are all UNC Charlotte graduates.

Kummer, 31, and his wife, Nicole, reside in Charlotte.
