THE IMPORTANCE OF
ASSISTANT COACHES

 In
corporate America the CEO gets all the credit for
a company's success. He or she is made out to be
the one person responsible for everything good
that has come to the company. But there are always
people who put in just as much time and effort,
without the glory of getting mentioned on CNN. In
college basketball we call these people assistant
coaches. With any job, you are only as good as the
people that surround you and assistants are as
much a part of a team's success... |

  During
this entire season his team received exactly one vote in
the Mid-Major Top 25. That vote came in the most recent
poll, but at least somebody noticed that the job Tom
Schuberth has done. He was an assistant for a
quarter-century before being named the thirteenth head
coach in University of Texas-Pan American history (April
2006). Last season he won 14 games, more then doubling
the previous year’s total (6). This season he finished
18-13. It’s only the program’s second winning season at
the DI level. Life at the mid-major level is often spent
on the road, but the Broncs made a season of it playing
just ten home games. A season with 21 road games and no
conference affiliation usually ends with a job search.
It never ends with 18 wins. It could have been more.
Prior to the start of the season Adinson Mosquera (6-9,
Colombia) was declared ineligible by the school. There
was some controversy surrounding that decision. His
presence would have been good for at least a few more
wwins. Schuberth is a national coach of the year

IT'S ABOUT
BALANCE

 Balance.
We hear that word used quite often in sport.
Having a good balance is crucial to the success of
a team, but it’s not what most would think. It’s
less about a balanced attack and more about the
balance of the individual, right down to the basic
positioning. While I am a disciple of Coach Wooden
I haven’t implemented the UCLA style of play as
much as I have implemented coach Wooden’s
attention to detail and focus on the fundamentals.
And all that begins with balance. |
