Zero Tolerance

By THE GRASSHOPPER

The Grasshopper was one of the few to hype up Phil Martelli's St. Joe's team, prior to the start of the season  (AP).

What's going on?

I can't even read a newspaper anymore. I am starting to "not" read the Internet. I've even gone as far as not watching the six o'clock news!

Athletes are starting to tick the Grasshopper off!

Where do I start? You can look all around the horn. I'm not going to point fingers and start naming names, but "what's going on?"

There are more names in the police blotter then the transactions.

What kind of animals do we have representing our teams?

I'm starting to like the "zero tolerance" theory more and more.

We need to start disciplining these kids at an early age. The times of giving "time-outs" to junior when he acts up has got to go. My dad used to whack me and my mom would follow up with another as I walked away.

I was trying to discipline my son the other night in public and a couple looked at me like I was in the wrong!

College Coaches, if you're reading this, and I know some of you do, please turn it up a notch when it comes to: recruiting kids, and disciplining them when they do wrong. High school coaches, start tossing kids off the squad, junior high coaches, start benching kids, and to the parents, your kid is out of time-outs, the clock is winding down, don't turn the ball over, don't force a bad shot?Straighten the kid out the old fashioned way! They'll get the message?

How about my guys from St. Joe's? Remember they used to call them; St. Joe's (PA)? Martelli was like, "why do they refer to us as "PA"?

Check my first column of the year; I had them in my Top Six pre-season, who else had the balls to rank them that high?

Something tells me Chicago Bulls head coach Scott Skiles would make a better college coach.

Please leave the General alone?

How many top 25 teams lost last week?

What was the ESPN sideline reporter doing with that makeover? Auditioning for the Rocky Horror Movie?

Go figure dept.: Marquette wins at Louisville, but then turns around and losses to TCU?

Cleveland State is 0-11 in conference play. Wright State is 8-2. Why do I bring this up you ask? Both schools have a first year guy running the show in the Horizon league

Jacksonville beat Gardner Webb Thursday night.

Minnesota's Kris Humphries will play "Drago" in Rocky 10.

I thought I was watching a Final Four game the other night with Memphis and Louisville.

Two very nice guards play in the MAAC; Keydren Clark (St. Peter's) and Louis Flores (Manhattan)

You don't think losing a player to the "league" matters? See Central Michigan University. After winning the MAC, and then beating Creighton in the first round of the NCAA tournament, their center, Chris Kaman leaves after his junior year and turns pro. The Chips are struggling at 2-17 right now.

I love Michael Watson from UMKC.

No 'Bron-'Bron on the Eastern conference all-star team? Ok, that's it, I'm not watching. I wish Mark Price was still with the Cavs and he had a chance to play with LJ this year instead of Jeff McGinnis and Kevin Ollie.

Is Former Gonzaga guard Richie Frahm in the three-point shooting contest?

One of the most underrated coaches in the game is Franny O'Hanlon from Lafayette. He's got them playing hard at 16-4 and 7-0 in the Patriot league.

How about Stan Joplin at Toledo? He's got them at 16-4 this year.

I watched Uconn and Tennessee Thursday. Then I went to the tavern for a few cold ones.

Remember that jam by Sly and the Family Stone, "It's a Family Affair?" well this Friday James and Joe Jones go at it in the Ivy League. They should play that tune during warm-ups.

Does anyone remember when Air Force was in the Big Dance?

Interesting tidbit; What do Michigan State, North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Arizona all have in-common? The Grasshopper will enlighten you, next time....
