  JUMP SHOTS

Top Dog

By THE GRASSHOPPER

The Grasshopper is in full agreement with Maine coach John Giannini and his recent "Rant and Rave" column  (AP).

I can't believe how many teams get knocked off as soon as they are voted number one this early in the polls. Actually, I can believe it, there is so much parity today in college hoops. The rankings are meaningless anyway, I'm serious. They are for the fans mostly, and some weak-sports talk shows. But when it's all said and done, I think Uconn is going to be the last one standing at the Alamo.

Do you believe 28 D-1 teams are still without a "W", against a D-1 opponent?

My boys from So. Cal got jerked again. The Trojans don't get any respect. Their fans will be chanting, "nuts and bolts, nuts and bolts, WE GOT SCREWED!" They will kick Michigan's ass, just watch!

Kevin Garnett is the best player in the world.

Speaking of the best, who's the best college basketball player this year?

Who gets to keep all that money they have been finding in Iraq? I say let the soldiers split it up. If that were me, I would've grabbed a stack of Ben Franklin's and stuck them in my boots. And why didn't my man in that Spider Hole at least shave for the cameras?

Large type in the New York Times is the way to go.

The Humanitarian Bowl, Capital One Bowl, Outback Bowl, Continental Tire Bowl, why not have a Grasshopper Bowl!

The Cornhuskers football coach was fired after going 9-3.

'Cat in Da Hat' movie is not for kids, trust me.

Do not get your kids an And 1 Mix tape for Christmas, which, by the way, is the worst basketball I have ever seen.

Sorry sports fans, but Serena is not worth "double-nickels."

FYI - the Cavaliers activated Bruno Sudov and the Suns gave Cezary Trybanski a uniform.

Coach Giannini from Maine is right. Enough of the "cupcake" talk. I love when the Maine's and the Cleveland State's scare the big boys. I think this year's NCAA tournament is going to have more upsets then ever before. And why was Pitt playing Georgetown (Ky.)

Which reminds me, remember when "Lefty" was talking about Mid-majors? "We ain't no Mickey Mouse team."

The Maxim ads on College Insider's front page are off the hook, I'm a scared to click on that link.

Greatest flick ever is 'Saturday Night Fever'!

Quick, where is Tougaloo? They played La.-Monroe Thursday night. And what about Sewanee? They played Lipscomb.

The 'Noles are 9-0 and play Pittsburgh on Monday. But first they have to play Chicago State on Saturday. That makes five teams in the ACC who are undefeated and Duke isn't one of them.

My boys from George Mason are off to a 5-2 start. I'm going with the Patriots to win the CAA this year. Jim Larranaga is doing an outstanding job and he has been one of my favorite coaches over the years.

Northern Arizona was getting 13 against UNLV and they upset the Rebels Thursday night.

The Knicks, Jets, Giants, St. John's, and Wagner, what's going on with the Big Apple teams?

I let my boy jay-bee off the hook this week. But I'll be back with my Christmas gifts next week.

Stay cool!
