THE 2005 RUNWAY TO THE FASHIONABLE 4 FIELD
By Jalen Rose, Toronto Raptors

March 14, 2005

The Assistant Coach Field is Announced

Majestic Monday. It sounds hip and stylish. The term “majestic” separates the pretenders from the contenders. A lot of guys are stylish, but only a select few can be majestic.

I have been keeping tabs on Angela Lento’s Runway to the Fashionable 4, ever since my man Tony Jones (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) started getting some run in the Fashion Power Index. At first I had just a mild interest, but that’s the no longer the case. With all the trash talking and guys fighting for position on the block, the quest for the Fashionable 4 has really gotten my attention. And I am not the only person in the NBA that keeps an eye on the FPI.

Angela has really turned this into a big time event. Listening to Tony and Kerry Keating (UCLA) talk smack to one another is priceless. By nature, coaches and players are so competitive so the idea of a field of sixty-five coaches, only fuels the competitive fires.

Everybody wants to look presentable, but many people take a real serious approach to their attire. So it only stands to reason that the very stylish coaches would want to put their gear up against other fashionable coaches. And if your wardrobe rates out higher and you advance, you can talk smack to the loser for an entire off-season.

And there is an awful lot of jawing, once the competition begins.

Last season, without any influence from yours truly, T Jones captured the crown. He took down Keating in the fashion finale, in San Antonio, TX. Keating is obviously a little bitter, as he has been chirping ever since he lost to Jones.

This season he got his own personal fashion commentary column, which immediately prompted me to get space to express my thoughts. It gives me a forum to remind Kerry that was the runner-up and nobody ever remembers who finished second.

He thought he was smooth with his witty columns about T Jones being my butler, but it’s all-good. Kerry can provide opinions in his columns, which I can offset with facts. And the fact remains that he is the runner-up. That’s a hard pick that you can’t run through, Keating.

The style tournament hits the stage this Wednesday. The fashion style-in contest will feature Oakland’s Devon Smith and Wofford’s Matt Allen. The winner gets the reward of facing Missouri assistant, Melvin Watkins in the first round, which will take center stage on Monday, March 21.

It should be a great three weeks of trash talking.

There are a lot of stylish guys in this year’s field, but Kerry Keating isn’t one of them. If you don’t believe me, well just check out his seeding in the field. What’s up Kerry? You are so stylish that you couldn’t even get a No. 1 seed?
