The 'Trendy Two'

After over five months of competition the field that began with over 100 contestants had been narrowed to four -- The ‘Fancy Four.’

All the big names came out to the spectacle on the stage. Jerry Tarkanian and Denny Crum were in attendance in support of Southeast Missouri State’s Tom Schuberth. The SEMO assistant was one of the preseason favorites to reach the championship stage.

In stark contrast, Portland State’s Brian Loyd burst onto the catwalk in mid-season, but PSU head coach Joel Sobotka was quick to point out that his understudy is peaking at the right time.

“It’s not where you begin, but where you finish,” said Sobotka. “Brian has brought a lot of class and elegance to the Portland State program and advancing to the ‘Fancy Four’ is a credit to his hard work and passion for attire.”

The audience was entertained as Loyd and Schuberth took the stage, each displaying the gear that got them here. Fashion color analyst Shakey Rodriguez broke down the action.

“At this point in the season you don’t want to make any radical changes,” said the former Florida International coach. “You go with what got you here. In basketball, you will often hear a coach say that we might throw another wrinkle into the mix, but that approach would have a negative effect on the outcome here. I expect a few surprise today.”

Loyd, known as ‘No. 8’ by his players, was impressive in the early stages. His trendy approach was a favorite of the younger members of the audience.

Schuberth went with his trademark Armani collection giving him a more upscale and elegant look.

At the half, in the first semi-final catwalk contest, Schuberth held a slight advantage.

“We feel good about the way things have unfolded,” said Sobotka. “Brian has done a nice job of keeping his composure. I have assembled a crack staff of tailors that will help him to make some adjustments so things are looking pretty good right now.”

The two contestants scheduled to take the stage in the second contest of the day showed up to get a peak at the action. Wofford’s Mike Young was flanked by Terrier’s head coach Richard Johnson, while Marist assistant Steve Sauers was accompanied by the one and only Dave Magarity.

“I am still miffed about my loss on the runway,” exclaimed Magarity. “What disturbs me more are the comments of Shakey Rodriguez in the aftermath of the loss. Not only am I here to support Steve [Sauers], but I also showed up to say a few things to Ricky Ricardo.”

Magarity settled in with coach Sauers to watch the second half action.

“Coach Loyd has his work cut out for him,” said Shakey. “Coach Schuberth looks tailor made for this event. On another note, I am quite surprised that coach Magarity would make an appearance at this event today. Fashionable is not a word that will find its’ way into the same sentence with Dave Magarity.”

As Shakey and Magarity exchanged looks, Loyd took to the stage to make his statement.

He quickly picked up points, but Schuberth had an answer for everything that Loyd put on. As the clock winded down it was apparent that Schuberth was simply ‘wearing’ down Loyd. The SEMO supporters began to celebrate as Schuberth went deep into his closet to put it away.

“Armani was the difference,” said Shakey. “When you get 30+ from a Armani you are going to be tough to beat.”

The Portland State crew was disappointed, but kept it all in perspective.

“It was a great run on the runway,” said Sobotka. “We are proud of Brian’s effort. No question he will back for another crack at the crown next year.”

Loyd and Schuberth now gave way to Sauers and Young.

Magarity wasn’t vocal, but held up a sign which made its’ own statement: ‘The Young and the Dress Less – Go Steve Sauers.’

Sauers was first on stage and he dazzled the crowd. His three-piece suits and George Hamilton tan quickly gave him the early advantage, but it was clear that his opponent came ready to sport it as well.

Mike Young raised the roof with his display and threw numerous ties at Sauers, confusing the Marist assistant.

Marsit was forced to call a ‘tailor timeout.’

Magarity advised Steve to switch from the ‘Regis Philbin’ look to a more sporty and hip look. Sauers came out refreshed, with a touch of gel that closed the gap on Young. By halftime, we were right where we started, thread-locked.

“I am very please with the run Steve made before the intermission,” said Magarity. “I can see a berth in the title game on the horizon.”

Sauers came out in the second half right where he left off. He continued to give Young a variety of looks, which seemed to take Young out of his game.

The two battled back and forth and it came down to the final few steps.

Just a few strides from the end of the runway, Young and Sauers looked poised for a photo finish, but young leaned forward and edged Sauers by a tie’s length.

“I am stunned,” said Magarity. “These past two days have been tough to handle. I was very confident that Steve would get to the winner’s circle. Obviously this was a major upset.”

The Wofford people didn’t agree.

“It would have been an upset if Mike had lost,” said Richard Johnson. “When the announcement of this tournament was made last fall I penciled Mike in for the championship.”

So we’re down to the ‘Trendy Two.’

Tom Schuberth will face Mike Young on March 26th for the right to be called America’s best-dressed assistant coach.
