Lime is a winner!
By Jackie BraccoKeep in mind that there are still 33 invitations to be handed out and there are more than 50 worthy candidates. On the bubble is a phrase for the network guys. Angela and I prefer on the ‘fashion fence.’ Trust me, that fence is starting to bend under the stress.
All right guys, you want to win this thing? Listen up and take notes...
This time of year is a tough one, the weather is in an uproar and we are never really sure when to pull out the appropriate clothing from our closets and don the new spring colors. Well, here's some help.
Right now all the stores have their spring line in hoping to get a jump on the season and attract the fashion leaders. This season we can expect to see light, clean colors with lavender being the big hit. Lime is a second runner up and blues are always a favorite.
Speaking of lime, did anyone see South Florida assistant Clyde Vaughn on Thursday night? That lime colored sport coat was a 10! Very nice job of keeping up with the latest trends.
Here are a few observations of the past few days:
DENNY CRUM (Louisville): His red-shirt with basketball tie was a very bold statement, but I like when people take chances with their attire. Coach Crum sported this attire for his team’s game against UAB the other night. This look is further evidence of the wide range of clothing choices in his closet. His versatility puts him on my list for strong consideration for the runway field.
MATT DOHERTY (North Carolina): He is perhaps the best-dressed in the ACC before the actual game begins. The classic look is a winner with me, but the ‘Heels coach prefers to remove the coat once the action gets started. The other night against NC State, he took the same approach. As Angela would say, that is a fashion foul.
STEVE LAVIN (UCLA): Wow! Coach Lavin is one of the best-looking guys in the business. I love when younger coaches sport that classic look. Unfortunately, during their win over Cal on Thursday, he did as he always does…He took off the jacket. Coach: Hard for me to argue your case for a spot in the field if you keep removing the jacket.
MIKE MONTGOMERY (Stanford): He looks very nifty with his classic approach. The black suit with red, maroon or, in this case, ‘cardinal’ colored tie is a very nice approach. Team colors are always a plus. He looked wonderful in their win over USC.
HERB SENDEK (NC State): Once again we have a man who opts for the classic look. However, if you look closely you will see a big fashion foul. Sneaker pins just don’t do the wardrobe justice. The Adidas advertisement was in full view for the North Carolina game.
Back to the tips, here is where it gets racy…
Fashion designers have taken the business casual look and run with it! The basic suit, with a button down shirt and tie, has taken a back seat to a suit accessorized with a light, thin v-neck sweater. This look is everywhere.
Few sport it better than Rice head coach Willis Wilson.
An example of the mix and match of colors would be your typical navy jacket and pants brightened up with a lavender cotton sweater or a lighter blue one. An olive suit will work well with a tan or stone sweater.
This seems to be a favorite with many assistant coaches, but some dapper head coaches wear it well also.
Sam Houston State’s Bob Marlin and Vermont’s Tom Brennan look outstanding when sporting this look.
A coach brave enough to sport this new look will definitely gain points for being on the cutting edge, but I can't guarantee he'll turn heads. I'm not overly excited about this look. I prefer the classic attire with a shirt and tie, but I must give coaches like Brennan and Marlin their due.
As for the classic-look, this is one of the areas where Angela and I differ. She loves the 3-piece suit look of Cincinnati’s Bob Huggins and Arizona State’s Rob Evans.
Me, I like the attire of Texas A&M’s Melvin Watkins and Alabama’s Mark Gottfried, just to name a couple.
The conservative look is still going strong, which makes many men (and women) happy. The 3-button suit is still riding high on the fashion roller coaster. This suit works wonders on taller slimmer men, where shorter guys should stick with the 2-button. Both types still look sharp with a button down shirt and tie.
In the NCAA selection room, they have committee members with different agendas and that is how they get the best possible field of 65. The same is true in our fashion war room.
Oh, before I go, I forgot to mention cufflinks, they are huge right now. I give them thumbs up. It shows a guy has class without being too flashy.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-male me (male – you can tell where my mind is when it’s not on fashion).
But I love talking fashion and think that I was put on this earth to make men look and feel better!
