The Hoya Tradition
By
Craig Esherick, Georgetown Hoyas
The dictionary defines tradition as "A mode of thought or behavior
followed continuously from generation to generation."
The emphasis on academic and athletic excellence that John Thompson
established remains the Georgetown tradition that my staff and I look
to instill in the newest generation of Hoyas.
Mike Riley and I came to Georgetown in 1974 to pursue degrees and play
for John Thompson. Along the way to a top-flight education, we grew
up, absorbed a number of life lessons, and developed a belief that
focus, commitment and intensity are the foundation of success, on or
off the court.
We passed that belief on to our students, including Ronny Thompson,
Chip Sims and Ed Spriggs, who now help pass it on to a new generation
as assistant coaches in the program.
Because my staff and I have all lived the Georgetown experience, we
have not only immediate knowledge of the situations our students
encounter, but an understanding of how these experiences affect their
lives as they mature them into men.
On the basketball court, of course, our belief in Coach Thompson's
philosophy continues to prove that defensive intensity creates
offensive opportunity.
Coach Thompson was my coach for four seasons, and for 19 years, my
boss. I feel privileged to have worked for a hall of famer and cannot
think of a higher compliment than being compared to my mentor.
My staff and I are honored to continue the tradition that he
established, preserving and hopefully contributing to his legacy of
athletic and academic achievement here at Georgetown University.
