JERRY JOHNSON NAMED MID-MAJOR MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

The expression “Most Valuable Player” is an appropriate way to describe Rider’s Jerry Johnson. Given what he did this season, it is difficult to argue that any player was more valuable to his team’s success then Johnson.

“Forget about the stats and just watch him play,” says CollegeInsider.com’s Matt Drake. “Jerry was the heart and soul for Rider. When they needed someone to make a play, the ball was always in the hands of Jerry Johnson. And more often than not, he delivered this season.”

Johnson, who was named the CollegeInsider.com MAAC Player of the Year, finished third in the league in scoring (20) and fifth in assists (4.3), second in free throw percentage (87%), second in three-pointers made (67) and eighth in steals (27).

This season Johnson also reached the 2,000 point plateau, becoming just the ninth player from the seven Division I schools in New Jersey that have done it.

“This is a tremendous honor for Jerry,” said Rider head coach Don Harnum. “He has meant so much to this program and it is great to see him receive one more award. He did so much for our team in terms of production and leadership. He’s a special kid.”

The 6-foot senior helped Rider to a share of the MAAC regular season title. Led by Johnson, Rider finished 13-5 in the MAAC and 19-11 overall.
