WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
Jill's Montgomery's Recap |
Kerry Keating's Response
Both the semis
and the national championship
contests were competed on Monday.
Noticeably absent was yours truly.
It was a very difficult weekend. I
am still stunned and amazed that I
was knocked off the runway. I’m
happy for my man Robbie Laing, but I
considered filing a protest with the
National Association of Basketball
Coaches.
One thing very evident is the lack
of follicley-challenged participants
in the Fashionable 4 so I think my
argument would be very sound.
Instead I am going to lend my wealth
of style experience to Coach Laing.
Beating me clearly makes him the
favorite to grab the title of
best-dressed coach in America.
THE FASHIONABLE 4
Not really digging the teal coat
that Buzz Peterson has been
sporting. Buzz the North Carolina
Realtor look is not working. Sure
you’ve got a full head of hair with
some nice highlights but the
wardrobe needs updating.
While the Laing-Peterson contested
should at least be interesting, the
other matchup should simply be
postponed. Asbury, come on. You know
that you really shouldn’t have
advanced this far. The last time Tom
Asbury updated his wardrobe there
were only 48 teams in the NCAA
Tournament.
There are two interesting matchups
in the Assistant Coach Tournament.
The national semifinals find my man
Carmen Maciariello (AKA My Cousin
Vinny) went toe to toe with Jim
Corrigan’s manicured beard. This was
a good-natured matchup. The other
contest was pretty intense. Walter
McCarty took on Bacari Alexander.
Both guys are very serious about
their style.
Despite my loss in the ‘Elegant 8’ I
have to say that the 2010 Runway to
the Fashionable 4 has been very
successful. Over the past couple of
weeks we have learned a lot. Let’s
take a look…
WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED
-
We learned that
being bald on the
runway is bad and
being bald and
Portly is really
bad. See Steve
Hawkins.
-
We learned that Old
Dominion plans on
retiring Jim
Corrigan’s beard
next season.
-
We learned that
suits worn when
Nixon was in the
White House are
apparently still
fashionable. See Tom
Asbury.
-
We learned that
Frank Martin’s suits
are so angry he gave
himself a technical
foul.
-
We learned that Bill
Self is still
delusional about
being GQ.
-
We learned that Bo
Ryan will be
starring in the
remake of ‘The Pit
and the Pendulum.’
Vincent Price has
got sinister style!
-
We learned that Roy
Williams had no
business being a No.
2 seed.
-
We learned that
Marvin Menzies had
no business being in
this tournament.
-
We learned that
Buddy Holly lives in
Columbus. Stylish
specs Jeff Boals.
-
We learned that Bob
Marlin (AKA the
Marlboro Man) is now
the Cajun Cowboy.
-
We learned that you
can recruit a good
tailor to Buies
Creek. See Robbie
Laing.
-
We learned that you
can have a good
tailor and still not
be stylish. See
Kerry Keating.
-
We learned that I am
in fact much more
stylish than Bruce
Pearl. Bruce already
knew that though.
-
We learned that
Philip Banks left
the Fresh Prince of
Bel-Air and is now
coaching at Florida
Atlantic.
-
We learned that
Willis Wilson is
human after all.
Still can’t believe
he was defeated.
-
We learned that my
brother Brad made
the field because
they thought it was
me.
-
We learned that
Bruiser Flint and
Bacari Alexander are
the most stylish in
2010.

ON TO THE FASHIONABLE 4
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
Today is Draft
Day. Everyone will use today to set
the table for the upcoming season
and beyond. It’s about getting
instant impact and depth. History
tells us that some clearly do a
better job than others. Finding a
good tailor in the late rounds is
what makes the difference between
getting to the ‘Elegant 8’ and
advancing to the Fashionable 4.
It’s obvious that people like yours
truly have drafted well over the
years. My staff has done a great job
with advance scouting, tailor
evaluation and an outstanding
ability to build depth in my walk-in
closet. It’s no fluke that I am once
again on the verge of a returning to
the Fashionable 4.
For those of you who disagree with
my advancement, I would suggest that
you find a way to be more stylish in
the future.
The 2010 Runway to the Fashionable 4
has mirrored this year’s NCAA
Tournament with many surprises. A
lot of guys believe they are the
Butler of this year’s fashion
contest. Even non-style guys like
Buzz Peterson, who was pitted
against Rick Pitino in the ‘Elegant
8,’ is thinking they can win it all.
“If I can beat [Pitino] then next
year I will have to break out a
three-piece teal suit at UNCW to
match the standards of Rick’s white
suit. What an honor to go up against
Mr. Style.”
Buzz, a No. 3 seed, is one of the
highest remaining seeds in the
tournament. Only the little fella at
Drexel (Bruiser Flint) is higher as
a No. 2 seed. My man with the
toothpaste commercial smile has been
relatively quiet this year. Bru is
usually quite the trash talker. I
assume he has finally come to grips
with the fact that I am just more
stylish than him.
One person who seems to be having a
tough time accepting the reality of
it all is CollegeInsider.com
co-founder Joe Dwyer. Upon learning
that the ladies had advanced me into
the ‘Elegant 8,’ Dwyer called and
left me a message:
“The fact that you are even in the
field is laughable,” Dwyer told me.
“You have got to have photos on
someone to have advanced this far.”
Those comments come from a guy who
walks around with a Burton skull cap
and shirts with crosses and
skeletons. Seriously Joe.
ASSISTANT COACH RESULTS
-
Kevin Easley (High
Point) has stunned
all the GQ experts
by advancing to the
‘Elegant 8’ as a No.
16 seed. The guy is
smooth but the
stylish beard of Jim
Corrigan (Old
Dominion) was a
little too much.
Serpico!
-
Wayne McClain
(Illinois) has used
a wide variety of
looks to out-style
the competition by
man Carmen
Maciariello wasn’t
impressed. He told
Jimmy Whispers to
put ‘em in the
bathroom. A Bronx
Tale!
-
Melvin Watkins
(Missouri) has a
National
Championship. Walter
McCarty (Louisville)
doesn’t have that
experience, but he
does have Rick
Pitino’s clothier at
his disposal.
McCarty advances to
Fashionable 4.
-
In the 13 year
history of the
Runway to the
Fashionable 4,
nobody has more wins
on the catwalk then
Willis Wilson
(Memphis). All of
those wins came as
the head coach at
Rice where he won
two National
Championships. Now
he is competing
against the Willis
Wilson of assistant
coaches in Bacari
Alexander (Western
Michigan)
Did I read the card
right? Bacari beat
Willis? That’s the
biggest upset in
Fashion history.
Biggest ever!
|
HEAD COACH
RESULTS
-
The entire
membership of the
‘Stylish Bald
Coaches Association’
was on hand to see
the regal Randy
Bennett (St. Mary’s)
square off against
Tom Asbury
(Pepperdine) who was
stylish 25 years
ago. Actually I
don’t think Asbury
has ever been
stylish. Despite
that very important
fact, the Duke of
Asbury advanced.
Hey Tom, do the
right thing and
politely decline the
invitation to the
Fashionable 4.
Gracefully bow out
and let Randy
Bennett advance.
Come on Tom.
-
Ron Hunter (IUPUI)
is another guy with
a lot of versatility
in his closet, but
it’s just hard to
compete with that
‘Crest’ smile. The
little fella from
Philly is back in
the Fashionable 4.
-
Buzz Peterson is the
only coach in runway
history to notch two
wins for one school
(Appalachian State)
and then win at
least one contest
with another school
(UNC Wilmington).
Make that two wins
as Buzz, with A LOT
OF HELP FROM MICHAEL
JORDAN gets past
defending runway
champion Rick Pitino.
-
The final spot in
the Fashionable 4
came down to yours
truly vs. Robbie
Laing (Campbell). I
am still waiting to
hear back from
Danielle Wolfe and
Jill Montgomery
regarding Robbie
Laing’s advancement
to the Fashionable
4.
This is clearly a
mistake, right?

The 2010
Fashionable 4 concludes on Monday
April 26.
April 19, 2010
THE ELEGANT 8
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
What a great
weekend. The Yankees continue to
play good baseball, the Red Sox
continue to play poorly and my run
to the Fashionable 4 continues!
Bruce Pearl had no chance. It was
over early. I have advanced to the
‘Elegant 8,’ just one step away from
the Fashionable 4.
I am getting a little tired of all
the haters trying to mock my
participation in the fashion
tournament. It appears there are a
number of people who believe that my
advancement is based solely on my
relationship with CollegeInsider.com.
I am on the verge of advancing to
the Fashionable 4 because I am
simply more stylish than my
competition.
That guarantees at least two SBCA
members in the ‘Elegant 8,’ as Randy
Bennett (St. Mary’s) and Steve
Hawkins (Western Michigan) competed
for the right to advance. My man
Hawk is going all out in an effort
to style past Bennett. He has once
again written to the fashion panel.
Dear Ladies,
First, I'd like to
commend the committee on
their selections thus
far. Justice is finally
being served. Now, I
have followed and heard
some of the whining but
this is what happens
when you finally get to
play on a neutral site.
On any given night
anything can happen.
There are no home games
here and, THANK GOD, no
referee's with
conference affiliations
to hide behind!
Next, I'd like to
quickly address Ms.
Montgomery's comments
directed at me using my
portly and stout body
type as a crutch. This
was just downright
hurtful and uncalled
for. But, I'm above that
and passed it off as
"National Pick on the
Bald Fat Guy Day." I'm
bigger than
that...literally and
figuratively.
If it does come down to
lighting, as Seth
suggests, then I will be
fine. Randy isn't even
bald. He goes with "The
Shadow" look. Correct
lighting will expose
this. There's one other
thing I have going for
me...history. We played
in the Diamondhead
Classic in Hawai'i this
past December and St.
Mary's was there also.
While we didn't get
matched up on the court,
it was clear as a
Kalamazoo night that I
had the better Hawaiian
print shirt on during
that Tournament. Nothing
speaks clearer than head
to head competition. I
am proud of my Sweet 16
appearance but have my
sights set on the big
prize!
Sincerely,
Steve Hawkins

ASSISTANT
COACH RESULTS
-
The Big Ten showdown
went right down the
wire. My man Buddy
Holly nearly got
past Wayne McClain.
Jeff Boals came out
of nowhere this
season to make a
statement on the
runway. In the end
he was hurt by the
fact that he worked
for Keith Dambrot
(Akron). Dambrot
isn’t exactly the
most stylish guy.
-
The long coat has
become Tracy Dildy’s
(Illinois-Chicago)
calling card. Dildy
is pretty stylish
but I don’t want to
wake up with a horse
head in my bed.
Carmen Maciariello
(Fairfield)
advances. Las Cosa
Nostra!
-
How about Kevin
Easley (High Point)
and Charles Baker
(Campbell)? A Big
South matchup for
the right to move on
to the ‘Elegant 8.’
Can a No. 16 seed
really win it all?
-
Jim Corrigan (Old
Dominion) is really
working the blue
suit with white tie
look. Corrigan has
really benefited
from the
hand-me-downs from
Blaine Taylor. It’s
pretty clear that
nothing fits Blaine
anymore. Rodney
Terry (Texas) has no
shot against
Serpico.
-
Bacari Alexander
(Western Michigan)
advances. Bacari is
pretty intense
competitor. How
about a little less
time in front of the
mirror and a little
more time on the
road getting players
for Hawk.
-
The timeless
elegance of Willis
Wilson (Memphis) was
too much for Lew
Hill’s (UNLV) Vegas
flash.
-
Scott Monarch
(Marquette) couldn’t
compete with the
Melvin Watkins
(Missouri)
‘Garanimals
Collection.’ Melvin
let’s be honest we
know your wife
Burrell is the
reason you have
become stylish over
the years.
-
If Walter McCarty
(Louisville) lost to
Alvin Brooks III
(Bradley), Pitino
would fire him.
Pitino assistants
get a bonus to
making it to the
Fashionable 4. Hey
Walter, help out my
Ralph Willard. It’s
embarrassing.

HEAD COACH
RESULTS
-
Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier
and Keith Hernandez
showed up to watch
Jay ‘Touch of Gray’
Wright face off
against Robbie Laing
(Campbell). Can you
hear Clyde saying
it? “No play for Mr.
Gray!” Robbie Laing
stuns Clooney!
-
Dana Altman
(Creighton) vs. Buzz
Peterson
(Appalachian State/UNC
Wilmington)? How did
these guys advance?
Not even the
President had these
two guys advancing.
Somehow Buzz
survived. Very weak
bracket!
-
Bald is sexy but
apparently that
slogan wasn’t enough
for Phillip Banks
(Mike Jarvis,
Florida Atlantic) to
get past Pitino.
-
The Duke of Asbury
continues to roll.
The man with the tan
outlasted Gary
Waters. Hey Kerry
Keating (Santa
Clara), it wasn’t an
upset when Asbury
beat you so deal
with it. You gotta
love Asbury’s bronze
complexion!
-
Horace Broadnax
(Savannah State)
brought that
sophisticated
Capitol Hill look to
the stage. Ron
Hunter (IUPUI) had a
little more variety
on this day. My man
Hunter is smooth.
-
Talk about a size
mismatch. Wayne
Tinkle (Montana) is
walking eclipse.
Poor Bruiser Flint
(Drexel). You gotta
feel for the little
fella. Flint’s
off-the-court casual
gear gets him
through to the next
round.
-
The Bald vs. Bald
contest was one of
the highlights of
the competition.
Let’s face it;
neither of these
guys can go ‘off the
rack.’ 54 short
isn’t easy to find.
Randy Bennett is
looking regal these
days.

ON TO THE SENSATIONAL 16
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
Great job by
Jill Montgomery on two fronts. First
she did a terrific job capturing the
pulse of the 2010 Runway to the
Fashionable 4 in her latest column
‘Outrage and Euphoria.’ Secondly
she, and the rest of the selection
committee, make the correct choice
in moving me past Sydney Johnson
(Princeton) and into the
‘Sensational 16’
Only 16 remain in the quest for the
title of best-dressed coach.
I read some interesting comments in
Jill’s recent column. Bill Self
remarked, “It is painfully obvious
that the Committee has not been to
Kansas lately to see how far ahead
of the fashion curve we REALLY are.”
Come on Bill let’s be serious. In
your case the curve is inverted. I
have got to agree with the style
committee on this one. Although I
will agree with you on one thing,
Frank Martin (Kansas State) has no
business being a No. 1 seed. I am
sure one of his suits just got real
angry with my comments but let’s be
honest; Martin should really be
switching places with me. He is more
like a No. 15 seed.
I saw my man Kerry Keating (Santa
Clara) popping off. He told Jill,
“In reading Seth’s blog, I have one
thing to say: Hey Seth if ‘bald’ is
the best aspect in your style then
you might want to seriously consider
getting a complete makeover.”
That’s comical coming from a guy who
got his wardrobe as part of the
‘Buzz Peterson hand-me-down program’
some years back at Tennessee. That
program was established to help the
fashionably challenged in the
greater Knoxville area. I think Buzz
has that same program now at
Appalachian State. I can see about
getting you enrolled. Clearly it’s
needed.
ASSISTANT COACH RESULTS
-
Looks like the Buddy
Holly revival tour
will continue. Jeff
Boals (Ohio State)
went ‘Peggy Sue’ on
Yanni Hufnagel
(Harvard). The
Jewish Coaches
Association is very
proud of the young
Mr. Hufnagel.
-
Little disappointed
to see Matthew Fox
(Eric Eaton,
Quinnipiac) knocked
off the runway by
‘My Cousin Vinny’
(Carmen Maciariello,
Fairfield). Two
yutes.
-
Looks like we get
another episode of
‘The Shield.’
Michael Chiklis
(Scott Monarch,
Marquette) and his
beautiful polished
dome are into the
Sensational 16.
-
How about Charles
Baker (Campbell)?
Campbell has beaten
North Carolina
(Steve Robinson) and
Louisville (Steve
Masiello) to
advance. That is
pretty impressive.
-
It’s official.
Seprico 2, The Jim
Corrigan Story is in
production.
-
Don’t recall seeing
any tweets from
Rashard Lewis about
yours truly so I am
wondering how it is
that Alvin Brooks
III advanced? Brooks
isn’t even the
best-dressed in his
own family. That
title goes to his
dad, who is back
coaching at the
University of
Houston with James
Dickey. That’s
outstanding!
-
COMPLETE RESULTS OF
SECOND ROUND
|
HEAD COACH
RESULTS
-
Robbie Laing
(Campbell) is in the
Sensational 16.
Suddenly Buies Creek
has become the
Beverly Hills of the
South. Next up for
Laing is Clooney
(Jay Wright,
Villanova). This
might the biggest
mismatch in Runway
history.
-
Horace Broadnax got
coached up by John
Thompson Jr. and he
dispatched with the
Frank Martin angry
suit collection. Big
John told Horace
that Frank Martin
was a Villanova fan
in 1985. Hoya
Paranoya!
-
Bruiser Flint won?
Really? Please tell
me this is a bad
joke.
-
Tom Asbury
(Pepperdine) and his
one suit out-styled
Kerry Keating (Santa
Clara). The Duke of
Asbury went ‘Hot Tub
Time Machine’ on
Keating and beat him
with circa 1985
gear. How
embarrassing.
-
Steve Hawkins
(Western Michigan)
and Randy Bennett
(St. Mary’s) both
advance to the
Sensational 16 where
they will face each
other. Lighting will
decide this matchup.
Which dome will
shine the brightest
on center stage?
-
The ‘Fresh Prince of
Boca Raton advanced.
Philip Banks (Mike
Jarvis, Florida
Atlantic) will now
face Rick Pitino.
Don’t sell the card
carrying member of
the SBCA short. He
can beat Pitino.
-
My man Ron Hunter (IUPUI)
went ‘no shoes’ on
Jamie Dixon
(Pittsburgh) and
won. Coach Hunter
has done an
outstanding job with
‘Samaritan's Feet,’
providing shoes for
countless
impoverished
children around the
world.

FIRST ROUND IN THE BOOKS
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
The opening
round was completed over the
weekend. All four tops seeds
advanced in the Head Coach
Tournament. That wasn’t the case in
the Assistant’s Tournament. In
something of a major surprise, No. 1
seed and former Runway champion Tony
Jones (Tennessee) was beaten by
Kevin Easley (High Point).
I thought the selection
committee/voting panel might be able
to regroup over the weekend but this
is a clear indication that they are
simply lost, unable to recognize
true style. Guys like Drexel head
coach Bruiser Flint think they are
smooth but Tony Jones actually is
smooth.
My man Pearl was not happy about the
loss and he also voiced his
discontent. Bruce, word of advice:
Focus on the competition. Your
wardrobe isn’t so impressive that
you can afford to lose focus.
With T Jones now out of the
completion, the Southeast Region is
wide open now. My man Frank Serpico
(Jim Corrigan, Old Dominion) might
have a shot at getting through. How
pitiful is that!
ASSISTANTS FIRST ROUND RECAP
-
After a questionable
win in the
“Style-In” contest,
Jamie Kachmarik
(Appalachian State)
was beaten soundly
by No. 1 seed Wayne
McClain (Illinois).
Jamie you’ll have to
shop outside Boone
if you want to be
taken seriously in
the future.
-
Jeff Boals (Ohio
State) got past Mark
Montgomery (Michigan
State). Coach Boals
is really working
the stylish eyewear.
Buddy Holly lives.
-
Does anyone truly
believe they can
out-style my man
Willis Wilson
(Memphis)? I would
like to suggest that
CollegeInsider.com
name the
Best-Dressed Coach
Award the “Willis
Wilson Award.”
-
Alvin Brooks III
(Bradley) is getting
a lot of support on
Twitter from Rashard
Lewis (Orlando
Magic). Too bad
Rashard couldn’t
hook him up with a
real tailor. If you
want to advance I
want Rashard to
tweet:
“@HeadHokie Seth
Greenberg is a very
stylish and should
win the head Coach
Tournament.”
|
The second round
takes place on Tuesday.
THE REAL TOURNAMENT
My man Steve Hawkins is really
energizing the “Stylish Bald Coaches
Association.” He has been very vocal
about the inclusion of more
folliclely-challenged coaches being
included in the tournament and there
seems to be a little movement in
that direction by the selection
committee. Of course Hawk also
speaks for the “Portly and Stout”
Coaches of America. Unfortunately I
can’t help you there coach. I’m a
Bowflex type of guy.
I managed to obtain a copy of the
letter that Hawk sent to
CollegeInsider.com:
Dear CollegeInsider.com,
I don't know who made
the executive decision
to bring a "fashion
consultant" such as Jill
Montgomery aboard but
whatever her acumen is
it's obvious that her
people have not put the
proper facts in front of
her. There's no other
explanation for her
naming Geno Ford the
Best Dressed Coach in
the MAC. Her only
comment afterward is
that "bald is
beautiful." Has she even
seen a picture of me?
I'm bald also. Geno and
I have that much in
common. But that's about
all we have in common.
How can she pick him
over me when he doesn't
even wear a jacket!?
Plus, he only wears
white shirts. Heck, I
saw him recruiting in a
pair of Dockers last
summer! Are you kidding
me?
I swear I smell yet
another person in that
office that has a bias
against portly men! That
should have no bearing
on style. I will wait
and see how this bracket
shapes up before I pass
my final judgment.
However, let this email
serve as my official
notice that I'm
considering not
accepting a bid unless
my seed is appropriate!
With Hurt Feelings,
Steve Hawkins
Head Basketball Coach
Western Michigan
University |
After years of
knocking on the fashion committee’s
door, Hawk has finally been welcomed
in and shown to the second round.
Big win for the SBCA. It was the
second No. 15 to knock off a No. 2
in the 2010 Runway to the
Fashionable 4. Do you really need to
ask which other 15 seed advanced?
HEAD COACH FIRST ROUND RECAP
-
Still trying to
figure out how
Robbie Laing
(Campbell) beat the
Missouri Valley’s
most stylish (Gregg
Marshall, Wichita
State). Coach did
Gregg Marshall just
not show up?
-
Very disappointed in
Brian Jones (South
Dakota). I assume he
also didn’t show up
for his fashion
contest and thus
Kerry Keating (Santa
Clara) advanced.
-
Wayne Tinkle
(Montana) is College
Basketball’s William
Holden. The guy
looks like a movie
star.
-
I got upset when I
heard that Jamie
Dixon (Pittsburgh)
had beaten Greenberg
to advance. Then I
realized he beat my
brother, Brad.
-
Tom Asbury
(Pepperdine) and his
one circa 1985 suit
advanced past the
dapper Johnny Jones
(North Texas)?
Really? Is that true
or just a bad rumor
that the Asbury camp
is trying to spread?
-
Ben Jacobson
(Northern Iowa)
advances to round
two where he will
take on Bruiser
Flint (Drexel). Fly
Guy Flint has no
shot.
-
Frank Martin (Kansas
State) went “House
of Wax” on Vincent
Price (Bo Ryan,
Wisconsin) to
advance. Bo had no
chance against
Frank’s angry suits.
-
Marvin Menzies (New
Mexico State) beat
Lon Kruger (UNLV) to
advance. Seriously I
thought someone was
joking when I saw
his name in the
bracket last week.
Menzies really made
the fashion field?

SERPICO
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
There seems to
be quite a bit of support for an
additional tournament next season.
Too many stylish guys were either
omitted or saddled with a ridiculous
seed. Anyone that follows Virginia
Tech Hokie Basketball will tell you
that I was not treated fairly with a
No. 15 seed.
I placed a call to the
CollegeInsider.com offices to speak
with Jill Montgomery and Danielle
Wolfe. Neither was available.
Instead I got to speak with Joe
Dwyer. No surprising he wasn’t
exactly helpful. Here’s a guy that
wouldn’t know fashion if it bumped
into him. I saw him walking around
Indianapolis with a skull cap and a
shirt decorated with skeletons and
crosses. It’s the Final 4 not the
half-pipe. It is embarrassing Joe.
The good folks at Manhattan College
are wondering why Barry Rohrssen was
left off the runway. My man from
Brooklyn got no love from the
fashion committee. More alarming is
the fact that Tom Parrotta (Canisius)
was named best-dressed in the MAAC
thus garnering the lone bid for the
conference in 2010. Tom Parrotta?
Seriously who is making these
selections? The young Pat Riley
lookalike has no business being in
the field ahead of Brooklyn’s
finest.
Caught up with a number of the
competitors that did make the field,
including my man Bob Marlin. The
Marlboro Man left Sam Houston State
to take over at Louisiana Lafayette.
It’s been a hectic month but the
Cajun Cowboy sounded poised and
ready.
“I gotta tough matchup,” he said. “I
have made some adjustments to my
wardrobe, which I hope will make the
difference, but this isn’t Mike
Jarvis’ first rodeo. “
Coach if it were a rodeo I don’t
think my bald brother would fair
very well. I don’t think they are
roping calves in Boca Raton.
La Salle’s John Giannini was in good
spirits despite knowing that he drew
Clooney in the first round.
“Jay Wright is a one-man dynasty on
the runway,” said Giannini. “To
honest I am just happy I made the
field.”
Giannini did remind me that he made
College Basketball’s 50 Sexiest
Coaches a few years back. Good list.
Your truly was also among the 50.
Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan didn’t make that
list but he was among the 50
Least-Sexiest men in Madison. How
about my man Vincent Price? Bo has
to style his way into the tournament
against Bill Self. I think he is
going to go “Pit and the Pendulum”
on Self.
ASSISTANTS
I took a quick peek at the Assistant
Coach field and found some
interesting matchups. In the East
the 6-11 matchup has Jamie Foxx
(Ritchie McKay) matched up with
Matthew Fox (Eric Easton). Sorry
McKay but you “Lost.” No shot.
The 6-11 matchup in the Southeast is
an all CAA affair with Michael Huger
(George Mason) up against Jim
Corrigan (Old Dominion). Coach
Corrigan the beard is nicely
trimmed. You gotta nice Al Pacino
“Serpico” thing happening but let’s
be honest -- you have no business
being in a fashion tournament.
The 4-13 contest in the Midwest has
my man Michael Chiklis (Scott
Monarch) trying to take down Cy
Alexander. Detective Vic Mackey
looks like a future President of the
“Stylish Bald Coaches Association.”
STYLE IN
The winners of the “Style-In”
contests were announced on Friday…
Very disappointed to learn the Jamie
Kachmarick (Appalachian State) had
advanced. This is yet another
example of why random drug testing
for the fashion selection committee
is necessary.
In the Head Coach Style-In, the
Abominable Dr. Phibes out-styled
KU’s Aaron Eckhart.

REVIEWING THE FIELD
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
After having
some time to review the
Head Coach
Bracket
I can only come to one
conclusion -- The fashion committee
is lost. The lack of preparation is
alarming. There are some guys that
were awarded high seeds who have
never had their names mentioned in
the same sentence with the word
‘style.’ The fact that Bobby
McKillop didn’t even make the field,
while guys like John Giannini (La
Salle), Tom Izzo (Michigan State)
and John Thompson III (Georgetown)
did is absurd. Those three guys
combined couldn’t come up with one
nice outfit.
I have been in contact with Coach
McKillop and we are going to explore
the possibility of launching our own
Fashion Tournament next season. It
will be a small 16-coach field,
which will better serve some of the
game’s most stylish coaches because
it’s clear that this field is loaded
with the non-stylish.
Let’s take a quick look at the
field…
EAST REGION
My man George Clooney (Jay Wright)
has been working the tanning salon
hard. I want to know if the Big East
Conference’s George Hamilton is
using the spray on stuff or if he’s
standing in the booth. Jay Wright
has got to be one of the favorites
in the field, but he needs to go
with a lighter shade on the tan.
Seriously Jay!
Aside from Clooney and yours truly
there are a lot of questionable
entries in the East. Tom Pecora
(Fordham)? Really? Are you kidding
me? The Danny Zuko of the 2010
Fashion Tournament needs to go a
little lighter on the hair products.
That would also be a good piece of
advice for Gregg Marshall (Wichita
State) who is clearly the Steve
Lavin of the Missouri Valley
Conference.
Is the selection committee serious
about Izzo being in the field? I
like Tom but he’s from the Upper
Peninsula where style is nowhere to
be found.
Chris Mooney (Richmond)? You have to
be kidding me? A quick look at the
entire field finds a few Princeton
guys. A few too many, I might add.
Glad to see my good friend and the
Jewish Coaches Association Coach of
the Year Bruce Pearl (Tennessee)
make the field again. A word advice,
the sweater-look would not be a wise
choice Bruce.
SOUTHEAST REGION
Defending champion Rick Pitino
should have no trouble advancing
through a region of
fashionably-challenged coaches.
Nothing speaks more to the
committee’s lack of knowledge than
Roy Williams being a No. 2 seed.
Clearly the seeds should be reversed
with me being a No. 2 and Roy being
a No. 15. The guy has one color in
his wardrobe and the saddle shoes
are out. Come on coach!
I was happy to see a fellow member
of the SBCA (Stylish Bald Coaches
Association), Mike Jarvis (Florida
Atlantic) included in the field.
Always good to see a bald brother
getting love!
Not sure why Buzz Peterson
(Appalachian State) is a No. 3 seed.
He’s getting a lot of mileage out of
the “Michael Jordan was my roommate
in college” line. Buzz the
salt-and-pepper look is nice, but
you really don’t belong in a field
like this.
And who invited Georgia’s Mark Fox?
It’s embarrassing.
MIDWEST REGION
Frank Martin earning a No. 1 seed
might be the biggest joke of all.
Frank is the king of intensity. His
suits are angry. He must have worked
the selection committee the same way
he works officials. No way Frank
should be a No. 1 seed. Now way!
Jamie Dixon(Pittsburgh) was a child
model, but he certainly isn’t young
any longer. The hair is going back
on defense too. Let it go Jamie and
embrace the SBCA.
Nice to see the Bar Mitzvah clash
with Ben Jacobson (Northern Iowa)
and Dan Leibowitz (Hartford) matched
up in round one. I like the winner
of this contest to advance through
the region. Let’s be honest who is a
real challenger?
Bruiser Flint being a No. 2 seed is
laughable. Bru your time has passed.
WEST REGION
Even more comical than Frank Martin
being a No. 1 and Bruiser Flint
being a No. 2 is Marvin Menzies (New
Mexico State) being a No. 3 seed?
Who is making these decisions? No
question former Hawaii coach Riley
Wallace has used his influence with
CollegeInsider.com to get Menzies a
spot in the field.
The 2010 President of the SBCA Randy
Bennet (Saint Mary’s) should have a
clear path through the West. Randy
has a combination of your truly and
George Clooney working well. He
keeps everything buttoned like Jay
Wright and clearly gets his polished
dome from the author of this blog.
Impressive skull Randy.
Tom Asbury (Pepperdine) making the
field is proof that the fashion
selection committee should have
self-imposed sanctions. How about
some drug testing for the selection
committee? Tom is a good looking
older guy but he’s wearing the same
double-breasted suit he wore the
first time he coached at Pepperdine.
I saw Kerry Keating (Santa Clara)
was a No. 4 seed. Is he still
coaching? His old man, who is an
associate AD at Kansas is easily the
most stylish guy in that family.
Kerry would place fifth on his own
staff. He doesn’t even deserve a
spot in the assistant coach fashion
tournament.

BRACKETS REVEALED
by Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech
Well let me
begin by stating that this is an
absolute joke!
The
Head Coach
Brackets were revealed on
Tuesday and I was very disappointed
to find out that I was a No. 15
seed.
I have long considered myself to be
a great friend to CollegeInsider.com
and I would have thought after
nearly 15 years that the powers that
be would recognize my style and
flair is worthy of a No. 1 seed.
To make it worse, I love my brother
but there is no way Brad should have
a higher seed. I am very
disappointed with some of the new
fashion committee members.
It’s clear that Jill Montgomery has
a keen eye for style, as she
correctly named yours truly as the
Best Dressed Coach in the ACC.
However Danielle Wolfe, who is the
new chair for the Runway to the
Fashionable 4, has not done a good
job with the seeding.
Of course fans have the opportunity
to make it right. Fan participation
is encouraged on the 2010 Runway to
the Fashionable 4. Be sure to voice
your opinions by visiting Danielle’s
Twitter Page at:
http://www.twitter.com/fashionable4
On Wednesday I will begin breaking
down the field.
