WICHITA STATE
SHOCKERS
Coach: Mark Turgeon | Record: 24-8
Overview:
Yes, it's disappointing for the Shockers that
they were tripped up by Bradley in the MVC tourney
semis. But on the positive side, this was an ultra
competitive league this season, so it's extremely
impressive that Wichita State won the league's
regular season crown by a two game margin. Mark
Turgeon was named the Missouri Valley Conference
Coach of the Year, the first Shocker coach to gain
that distinction since Eddie Fogler shared the award
with Tulsa's J.D. Barnett way back in 1987.
Potential Difference Maker: Let's make this
one a duo. Forwards P.J. Couisnard and Kyle Wilson
combined to shoot 0-for-15 from the field in the MVC
tourey loss to Bradley. How these two bounce back
will say a lot about how far the Shockers can get in
this tournament.
On Offense: They are a motion team that will
run some set plays, mostly to get the ball inside.
They are a post-oriented team centered around Paul
Miller, the Missouri Valley MVP.
On Defense: They play standard man-to-man
defense that will allow you to run your offense
depending on their size and depth to wear teams
down.
Strength: They are deep and feature the
Missouri Valley’s best overall frontline with Miller
leading the way. They won the Missouri Valley, one
of this year’s best conferences and shoot very well
from the free throw line.
Weakness: They do not have depth at the point
guard position, so there is a big drop off if they
play their 2nd team point guard.
Key to Success: Keep the frontline out of
foul trouble and their guards must shoot well from
the perimeter to open up the inside play.
How to Beat Them: A disciplined offensive
system will lead to good shots and you must contain
the front line on the boards and in the paint by
making them earn their points.
