TEXAS A&M AGGIES
Coach: Billy Gillispie | Record: 21-8
Overview:
The Aggies have had an interesting roller
coaster ride of a season. During the 2005 portion of
the current schedule, the Aggies didn't lose, going
10-0 in November and December. But A&M stumbled to a
1-3 start in conference play. The good news for
Aggies fans is that the team sucked it up coming
down the stretch, winning their last seven regular
season games to finish a respectable 10-6 in
conference play. That streak included a 46-43 win
over Texas that wasn't much higher scoring than the
football game between the two schools this past
season (a 40-29 Texas win).
Potential Difference Maker: A&M was probably
relying too much on the inside-outside combo of
center Joseph Jones and guard Acie Law in the first
half of the season. But now, other players are
coming out of their shells, a prime example being
forward Marlon Pompey. The defensive stopper scored
a career-high 17 points in the season finale against
Texas Tech. It was his first double digit scoring
effort since December.
On Offense: Deliberate in the half court
really trying to go high/low and inside out. Acie
Law has carried them on the perimeter and will make
big shots.
On Defense: Tough, physical man to man
defense that will play hard and make your offense
work every possession.
Strength: This team plays extremely hard.
Joseph Jones and Acie Law create and outstanding
inside outside duo.
Weakness: Vanilla offense can be easy to
guard. They have gotten into trouble trying to force
feed the post. Who will step up besides Jones and
Law
Key to Success: Grind it out controlling the
tempo of the game. Create offense with their
defense. Get Law and Jones on track early
How to Beat Them: Force them into an up-tempo
style. Double team Law and Jones at every
opportunity and keep running guys at them. Make
someone else beat you.
