MURRAY STATE
RACERS
Coach: Mick Cronin | Record: 24-6
Overview:
Make that two out of three Ohio Valley tourney
titles for the Racers, who were also the league's
regular season champs this season. This is a bunch
that will press you on defense while not making a
lot of mistakes on offense, as evidenced by a top 25
ranking nationally in fewest turnovers per game
(12.5 a game). And it's a true team effort on the
offensive end, with six Racers averaging more than
6.1 points per game but none averaging more than
10.8.
Potential Difference Maker: With the scoring
by committee approach that Mick Cronin's team takes,
somebody will have to step up and make some long
range baskets in crunch time. That player could end
up being guard Tyler Holloway, whose 41.6% mark from
behind the three-point arc is the best on the team.
On Offense: They run a high-post offense and
will down screen for third and fourth options. They
will also run a little flex offense. They don’t have
one go-to-guy. It’s all about balance.
On Defense: They do a nice job with their
extended man-to-man in the halfcourt. Their
quickness and athleticism allows them to step out
and really contest everything.
Strength: Lack of a true go-to is actually
their biggest strength. They are a difficult scout
because you can’t really take away one or two
options. They are deep and they can all contribute.
Weakness: They aren’t a great shooting team
and when they struggle to knock down shots they may
press a little more to score.
Key to Success: They make a living on
second-chance points. Without one true first option
and average perimeter shooting, crashing the boards
and getting second and third looks is the key.
How to Beat Them: You have to get position
and keep them off the offensive glass. They will
come after you defensively so you must take care of
the basketball.
