GEORGE WASHINGTON COLONIALS
Coach: Karl Hobbs | Record: 26-2
Overview:
Sure, Temple rudely bounced the Colonials from
the A-10 Tournament and cost them some seeding
clout. But this is still a tough team with a bunch
of seniors who've done this NCAA Tournament thing
before. Center Pops Mensah-Bonsu's availability is
still in question in the wake of a knee injury he
suffered against LaSalle in late February. If he
can't go, head coach Karl Hobbs will have to figure
out how to keep the Colonials' hovering around the
80 ppg mark that they've been at for most of the
season.
Potential Difference Maker: If Mensah-Bonsu
can't approach his usual level of production, or if
he's not available at all, then Regis Koundjia's
importance suddenly takes a quantum leap. He's the
guy on the interior who'll pick up most of
Mensah-Bonsu's minutes, which means he'll have to
grab some boards and provide some junk points here
and there.
On Offense: They open the floor and will
share the ball as they are very balanced
offensively. They do a good job moving and try to
get defenses off balance to penetrate and kick. They
all can crash the boards. They are more inside
oriented with Pops Mensah-Bonsu. They are always
looking to push and score in transition.
On Defense: They are as disruptive a
defensive team in the nation relentlessly attacking
in their man defense, full-court presses and ½ court
traps. It is very hard to run your offense against
them.
Strengths: They are a very good passing team and a
great offensive rebounding team with so many long,
versatile athletes that can play on the perimeter
and score around the basket.
Strength: Confidence and maybe a little chip
on their shoulder. The Atlantic 10 did not get a lot
of respect this season and many people believe that
GW is nothing more than an average team from a
mediocre league.
Weakness: They are more vulnerable with Pops
Mensah-Bonsu out, because he is their inside
presence and intimidator. If you can handle their
pressure, you will get open shots.
Keys to Success: Mensah-Bonsu playing will
make a big difference and they need to get the ball
to the right players in crunch time. If they control
the tempo, they will be tough to beat for anyone.
How to Beat Them: Keep them off the offensive
boards and take care of the ball. It is a simple
formula of trying to keep it a half-court game, but
it is easier said than done.
